Nature of the beast

The nature of the beast is an expression that refers to the usually undesirable inherent or essential quality or character of a person, thing, event, or circumstance. It first appears in John Ray’s Collection of English Proverbs in 1678, which indicates that its first usage pre-dates this date of publication.
