Mufti

Plain clothes worn by a person who when at work wears a uniform e.g. servicemen, policemen, guards, railway officials etc. derives from the Arabic mufti a Moslem priest, a jocular reference to such a person’s clothes, which were far from plain. The expression dates from the early 19th century.
