Much of a muchness

Origin of: Much of a muchness

Much of a muchness

This odd expression meaning very much alike or more of the same thing is attributed to Sir John Vanbrugh in his play The Provoked Husband, which was published in 1728. Vanbrugh died in 1726 and his play was then completed by Colley Cibber. Since the phrase appears in Act I, Scene I, Vanbrugh is generally credited with its coinage.
