Motherless

The slang or informal use of motherless started in Britain, possibly Ireland, as an intensifier meaning extremely as in motherless broke or motherless drunk. That was in the 1920s but latterly the meaning has centred more and more on motherless on its own meaning very drunk, the ‘drunk’ having fallen away. Motherless today is simply a synonym for being very drunk.
