Mother of pearl

Pearls are found in pearl oysters but the shiny, iridescent lining of the pearl oyster shells also yields mother of pearl, so called because the pearl was ‘mothered’ in the shell. Mother of pearl is also found in other molluscs besides pearl oysters and the phrase dates from the early 1500s.
