Mother

This euphemistic version of motherfucker is now heard all over the English-speaking world after making its appearance in America during the 1930s. Frank Zappa’s group back in the 1960s was called The Mothers but their record label asked them to change the name because of the obscenity connotation. Out of necessity, they changed the name to Mothers of Invention. Recently, a TV sports commentator was heard to describe a rugby football player as a big mother. Decades have now passed and mother used in this way is seemingly respectable.
