Mob/mobster

Mob is of course a common English word for an unruly crowd or rabble, the word dating from the 17th century. In the sense of organised crime or the mafia, however, the word is American from c. 1927. Mobster is also American for gangster but this word is slightly older, dating from c. 1917.
