Millstone around the neck

Figuratively, means to carry a heavy, burdensome problem. In ancient times, probably the heaviest object one would encounter was a millstone. The first literal reference is from the New Testament, Luke 17:2, “It were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he cast into the sea.”
