Maiden over

Origin of: Maiden over

Maiden over

A maiden over in cricket is an over in which no runs are scored from the bat. Extras like wides or byes are not counted. The term derives from the attributive sense of maiden as in virginal or unsullied. Presumably, the bowler’s over is a maiden and therefore unsullied by having no runs scored off it. The use of maiden over is first cited from the late 19th century.
