Mad as a cut snake

Origin of: Mad as a cut snake

Mad as a cut snake

An Australian expression dating from the early 20th century denoting anger rather than mental imbalance. It presumably derives from the rather distasteful notion of a snake, cut in two, and the interpretation of its resulting agony and frenetic movements as anger. Australians of a more sensitive nature omit the word cut and favour mad as a snake but perhaps the less said about this expression the better.
