Lush (alcoholic)

Origin of: Lush (alcoholic)

Lush (alcoholic)

A lush is chiefly American slang for a drunkard or alcoholic and dates in this sense from the mid-19th century. It is thought to be derived from a largely forgotten piece of British slang from the late 18th century for liquor or alcohol, which the OED says has etymological links to ‘lushings’ or ‘lashings’ of alcohol, meaning copious quantities.
