Lower the boom

To lower the boom is to land a telling or knockout blow. The world of prize fighting in America borrowed the original nautical phrase during the early 1900s. Before this, being struck by a lowered or wildly swinging boom, the heavy spar at the base of a mainsail could be equally painful.
