Lolly/lollipop

Lolly is an abbreviation of lollipop, a form of boiled sweet usually on a stick, and dates from the mid-19th century. Lollipop is first attested from 1796 and derives from Northern English dialect lolly which means tongue, therefore lollipop was something to pop onto the tongue. Lolly as slang for money, as in a sweetener, derives from the same source but dates from the 1940s.
