Lichgate, lych-gate

This is the name of the roofed gateway to a churchyard, especially a churchyard with a graveyard attached. The word lichgate dates from The Middle Ages and derives from the Anglo Saxon word lich meaning a corpse. The corpse would be set down under the lichgate until the arrival of the priest for the funeral service and burial. See also Corporal.
