Larrikin

Origin of: Larrikin

Larrikin

A popular expression in Australia where it is still used to describe rowdy but generally good-natured hooligans. First cited in Australia from around 1870, the origin of the word is not known for sure. The OED has offered the simple explanation that it comes from the name Larry, short for Lawrence, but other sources believe the origin lies in 17th and 18th century British dialects. Scottish, Irish and Cornish dialects have been put forward as contenders but none have been proven beyond doubt.
