Landlord

This word dates back to the 1400s when it meant someone who owned so much land that some of it was rented out to tenants. It still retains this meaning when applied to people who rent property to tenants. It was not until the late 17th century that it became synonymous with innkeeper, whether or not the innkeeper owned ot just managed the inn.
