Laanie

Origin of: Laanie

Laanie

Laanie, variously spelt larny, larnie and sometimes lani is South African informal for posh or fancy. It is thought to derive from Afrikaans but other sources maintain it is street slang, originally used by South African Asians to describe white people. Whatever its origin, it has become part of South African mainstream language since the mid-20th century. In the mid-1990s, the South African Sunday Times recorded the word lani as Soweto slang, meaning white people.
