Knock spots off someone or something

To be far better than, to surpass or defeat easily, British informal dates from the late 19th century. The only explanation forthcoming for the spots are the spots or pips on playing cards that used to be targets at fairground shooting galleries but this appears to be a weak explanation that cannot be substantiated conclusively. Otherwise, quite what these spots are remains unknown.
