Keep a clean sheet

Origin of: Keep a clean sheet

Keep a clean sheet

Sporting terminology from association football meaning no goals conceded that dates from the mid-20th century, some say as long ago as the 1930s. The American equivalent is shut-out. Sports reporters once used sheets of notepaper to record details of games, goals scored, name of scorers, times etc. If no goals were conceded, nothing was recorded on the paper, hence a clean sheet.
