Just what the doctor ordered

This expression describes something that is exactly what is needed or wanted and appears to be of American origin with the obvious allusion to a medical doctor’s prescription or recommendation. The only attestation to date of origin is a rather vague ‘first half of the 20th century’ as quoted in Christine Ammer’s The American Heritage Dictionary of Idioms (1997).
