Jumping Jehoshaphat

Origin of: Jumping Jehoshaphat

Jumping Jehoshaphat

This is a curious one because of its apparent misspelling. 'Jumping Jehosphat' is a mild, American expletive that expresses surprise or adulation. It dates from the mid-19th century. The 'Jehosaphat' part is a minced oath in that it is a substitute for Jehovah or Jesus. Jehoshaphat, note the correct spelling, was an ancient King of Judah, and he is mentioned in the Bible: 2 Chronicles, Chapters 17 to 21. The 'Jumping' part of this minced oath is obscure, with alliteration being the only explanation.
