Jumper

Jumper as the name of a loose, outer garment dates from the mid-19th century. It has nothing to do with the physical act of jumping. The OED says it probably derives from the French jupe meaning skirt. Indeed, the first jumpers were more like smocks rather than the shorter garments so familiar today. See also jersey and sweater.
