Jonah

Origin of: Jonah

Jonah

British sailors’ have had a superstition since the 1600s that a certain member of their crew could be a Jonah and therefore bring them and the ship bad luck. The source of the superstition is the Bible story of Jonah, not the whale part, but the story of the ship on which Jonah had been. A terrible storm had been threatening to sink the ship until Jonah was thrown overboard, after which the storm miraculously abated.
