Jettison

This is a slightly more modern form of jetsam but not by much. Both words have been used since the 15th century. Jettison now means to throw anything out of a ship or aircraft to lighten its load and thereby save it from sinking or crashing. It derives from the French jeter to throw. See also flotsam and jetsam.
