Jerk

American expression for a dislikeable, dull or stupid person dates from the early 20th century as an abbreviation of jerkwater which was originally a remote railway facility where steam locomotives would jerk or extract supplies of water from a water tower. Jerkwater then became a term that described towns and districts so remote and backward that associations with stupid and dull evolved.
