Jackass

Origin of: Jackass

Jackass

Originally, jackass was a term for a male ass or donkey, Jack being a common name for a male of any description, as in ‘jack rabbit’, jack of all trades etc. It dates in this non-pejorative sense from the early 18th century. By the early 19th century, however, it came to describe a fool or idiot.
