Is the Pope a Catholic?

A jocular, rhetorical question that originated in America during the 1960s but which was soon adopted around the English-speaking world. It is usually used as a last word retort to some obvious question. For example, “Are you going to the game on Saturday? Response “Is the Pope a Catholic?” or “Is the Pope Catholic?” It is similar to other rhetorical questions such as “Do fish swim?” It does not work quite so well with “Do birds fly?” because there are about 40 species of flightless birds.
