In/out of the loop

Origin of: In/out of the loop

In/out of the loop

To be in the loop is to be informed and is American computer jargon from the 1980s. Loop is computer slang for circuit. Thus, if one is in the circuit, one is in the loop and therefore aware or informed. The antonym is out of the loop and to complete the loop is to complete or finalise a task of some sort.
