I’m all right Jack

Origin of: I’m all right Jack

I’m all right Jack

This British catchphrase gave rise to the ‘I’m all right, Jack’ attitude, which meant to be ruthlessly selfish and look after oneself with total disregard for others. The original expression, derived from the navy in the 19th century, was probably preceded with an obscenity such as, ‘fuck you, I’m all right Jack’, and displayed the same disregard for the plight of other sailors. The expression was revived in the 1960s after the Boulting Brothers movie I’m All Right Jack (1959) starring Ian Carmichael and Peter Sellars among others.
