Hungry as a bear, hawk, horse, hunter, lion, wolf etc

There are very many similes for phrases beginning with 'hungry as…' and most of them relate to animals like lions, wolves, bears, horses etc and most of them are very ancient. 'Hungry as a hunter', on the other hand, is attributed to the essayist Charles Lamb (1775-1834) where he uses the expression, “I came home, hungry as a hunter” in one of his letters. 'Hungry as a hawk' is not heard or used much these days, but dates from about the mid-17th century.
