Humbug

Origin of: Humbug

Humbug

Famously used by Ebenezer Scrooge to describe Christmas in Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol and means nonsense or rubbish. It dates from the mid-18th century and was originally students’ slang. The OED states the origin and etymology are unknown as is so often the case with slang. A contemporary suggestion is that it may arise from a humming bug the inconsequential noise made by an insect like a fly or a cricket.
