Hooker

Origin of: Hooker

Hooker

American term for a prostitute dates from around 1830 and derives from the way such women catch or hook their clients, much in the same way as an angler hooks a fish. It has no connection whatsoever with Fighting Joe Hooker the US Northern general in the Civil War who apparently had a predilection for women of negotiable affections. The term was in use long before his time.
