Hoodie

Origin of: Hoodie

Hoodie

Sometimes spelt hoody is short for hooded sweatshirt and can mean either the garment or the young, usually male, people who wear them. The word made its first appearance in America in 1991, where it derived from African-American hip-hop and rap culture. It soon spread to Britain where hooded sweatshirts have become the uniform and disguise of troublemakers and street gangs since the early 21st century.
