Hogmanay

Scottish and Northern English dialect word for the last day of the year or New Year’s Eve dates from the 1600s. It is not a Gaelic word and the OED suggests it may have come from the Norman French name for new-year’s gift, which was given and asked for on the last day of the year with the cry of “Hoguinané”.
