Hock

Hock as in to hock something means to pawn it. It is an American idiom dating from the mid-19th century and derives from the Dutch hok meaning a jail or prison. To be in and out of hock means to be in and out of debt and derives from the same source. Hock is British for any Rhine white wine and is an anglicised abbreviation of Hochheimer, a particularly popular make of German wine. This usage of hock as Rhine white wine dates from the early 1600s.
