Higgledy-piggledy

Origin of: Higgledy-piggledy

Higgledy-piggledy

This means disorder or confusion and is one of those largely nonsense, rhyming expressions that the language is so fond of, perhaps because children find them so easy to remember. This one dates from the 16th century and the OED suggests the root may have been higgly-piggly and therefore something to do with pigs and the disorderly and utterly irregular fashion in which a herd of these animals huddle together.
