Origin of: Heave-ho

Heave-ho

Originally, a nautical expression dates from the 14th century, used communually by sailors at work, pulling up anchors, hauling on sails etc. To give someone 'the (old) heave-ho' means to eject them, or dismiss them from employment, is more modern from the late 19th century.
