Heath Robinson

If something is a bit Heath Robinson or is a Heath Robinson device, it usually describes an absurdly complicated contraption, especially one that has to perform a basic, simple task. It is named after the Punch cartoonist William Heath Robinson (1872-1944) whose drawings of outlandish machines parodied the age of invention and amused readers greatly. His name and the meaning had passed into the language by the 1920s.
