Heads-up

Heads up is an American expression that started life as an interjection during the early 20th century meaning, pay attention. As time went by, from around c.1940, it became a noun meaning a warning or an alert - as in to give someone a heads-up on what to expect. These days, rather tiresomely, some people would rather have a heads-up than a meeting.
