Have the wood on or over someone

Origin of: Have the wood on or over someone

Have the wood on or over someone

To have the wood on or over someone is to get the better of them in any form of contest or competition. The expression is chiefly Australian and New Zealand and dates from the latter half of the 20th century. It is frequently used in sporting contexts where one team has the wood over another and therefore usually wins. It derives from touching wood as a superstition for luck.
