Have or get cold feet

To have or to get cold feet is to experience feelings of apprehension, doubt or reluctance, strong enough to prevent a person from going through with a planned course of action. Most sources attribute the origin to the American writer Stephen Crane who coined the phrase in his short novel Maggie: A Girl of the Streets {1896}.
