Hats off

Origin of: Hats off

Hats off

For centuries, taking one’s hat off in the presence of someone was a sign of respect but it was only from the mid-19th century that the expression became figurative in the sense of admiration or respect without an actual hat of any description in evidence. From this time onwards, the expression was also simplified to hats off to someone or something meaning congratulations and/or approval.
