Gravy train

This was originally an American expression dating from the early 20th century, which means an easy ride from which to make easy money. Gravy was an earlier American expression for easy money during the 19th century. It was always easy to skim off the gravy from any dish of food and indeed the gravy boat (the boat-shaped sauce dish) was yet another expression for easy money from around the same time.
