Gordon Bennett

Origin of: Gordon Bennett

Gordon Bennett

This is a popular euphemism, also known as a minced oath, for Gor blimey and other oaths starting with the word God. It dates from the early 20th century. The original Gordon Bennett was a Scottish immigrant who went on to make a fortune in America and owned, among other things, The New York Herald. His son Gordon Bennett Jr. was famous for his conspicuous wealth and received a great deal of publicity during the late 19th century on both sides of the Atlantic. It is not surprising therefore that people would start saying Gordon Bennett instead of Gor blimey or any other expression starting with the word God.
