Good/bad books

‘One’s books’ could, of course, refer to one's collection of books, but from the early 1500s, it could also mean the esteem, or lack of esteem, in which other people held one. Hence, to be in one’s good books meant to be in favour or well thought of, while the opposite held true of being in someone's bad books.
