Gone with the Wind

Origin of: Gone with the Wind

Gone with the Wind

This was the title of course of one of the most famous movies of all time made in 1939 after Margaret Mitchell’s novel of the same name published in 1936. The film starred Vivien Leigh, Clark Gable and Leslie Howard and won ten Academy Awards, a record only surpassed by Ben Hur in 1960. However, the phrase 'gone with the wind' was not coined by Margaret Mitchell but by Ernest Dowson in his poem Cynara (1896). The actual quotation is, “I have forgot much, Cynara! Gone with the wind".
