Going great guns

Performing forcefully and vigorously at great speed, in this context dates from the early 20th century and was associated with horseracing. Blowing great guns was a common nautical expression for strong winds during the 19th century. Before that, from at least the 15th century, great guns meant artillery. The force and the vigour of massed artillery is obviously the origin of the current figurative usage.
