God forbid

An ancient prayer or wish that something may not happen; and is probably older than its occurrence throughout the Bible but the Bible source usually given is Luke 20:16 “God forbid”. By the time of the King’s James Version in 1611, people were more accustomed to using the word God in off-hand phrases like this than their predecessors were.
