Give one’s right arm (for something)

To give one’s right arm for something or other means that one would go to extreme lengths, even to the extent of giving up one’s right arm, in order to achieve or gain something. The majority of the population are right-handed so losing one’s right arm would indeed be losing something valuable. The expression dates from the mid-19th century.
