Give it horns!

Origin of: Give it horns!

Give it horns!

A cry of encouragement meaning to go for it, with no holding back. The verbal and written expression is American from about the 1970s and is sometimes accompanied by a hand gesture that resembles the horns of a steer. The hand gesture itself is much older, from at least the 19th century, possibly older. Care should be exercised with use of the hand sign because it can mean very different things in different cultures, from the celebratory to the grossly insulting. In many cultures, it is a sign to bring good luck or ward off evil spirits. One source maintains that the expression, give it horns has been adopted by the sport of cricket, where it means to hit a six because six runs is the highest single hit in cricket and is signalled by the umpire holding both arms aloft in the shape of horns. The same hand sign is also common in Texas as a sign for their gridiron football team The Longhorns.
